Take Stock in Children, a non-profit organization, is looking for dedicated, empathetic UF students looking to make a huge difference in a child’s life. Take Stock in Children (TSIC) provides a life-changing opportunity for low-income and at-risk students to escape the cycle of poverty through education. TSIC offers every selected student, beginning in seventh grade, a full college scholarship, a volunteer mentor, and hope for a better life providing the student maintains average grades, stays out of trouble with the law, and most importantly graduates high school. Take Stock in Children is a proven solution to the current Drop-Out Crisis. 92% of Take Stock in Children graduate high school. That is 42% higher than Florida’s average and 61% higher than their fellow At-Risk Peers. 81% of TSIC enroll in college and 60% graduate college. That is 140% more than their at risk peers. To be successful, Take Stock in Children relies on the mentors to motivate the students to stay in school and graduate. Alachua County needs more mentors and is offering the opportunity to UF students! To become a mentor, a UF student will need to be able to dedicate one hour a week during the scholar’s lunch break to meet, for an entire school year. Take Stock in Children is also looking for UF Students wanting to volunteer as tutors for the high school and middle school scholars. This is a great opportunity for those wanting to help but do not have the time to mentor.
If at all interested in becoming a mentor or a tutor, please contact the TSIC Project Manager, Xan Minton at UF.TSIC@gmail.com.
